A FRANK FLOW water heat exchanger system using river energy to support sustainable heating and cooling at the Hunte flood barrier in Elsfleth.
At the Hunte flood barrier in Elsfleth, Germany, the existing fossil-fuel heating system was replaced as part of technical modernization. The nearby Hunte river was evaluated as a sustainable heat source, despite challenging conditions including tidal movement, restricted access, thick masonry structures, and water flow speeds of up to 5 m/s.
The solution used eight FRANK FLOW water heat exchangers connected to a heat pump system. The modules were mounted on a 4-ton concrete foundation and installed in the water using heavy lifting equipment. The system has been operating successfully since July 2024 and supports sustainable heating performance for the barrier facilities.
Water heat exchanger systems can use nearby rivers or water bodies as renewable energy sources, supporting lower-emission heating and cooling for infrastructure facilities.
